MIRÓ FOUNDATION

A LEADING INTERNATIONAL SPACE THAT PROMOTES THE WORK OF JOAN MIRÓ AND CONTEMPORARY ART.

WEB

The Joan Miró Foundation opened its doors in 1975 and was created by Miró himself with a catalogue consisting mainly of his private collection. The aim was to create a leading international space in Barcelona, to promote research and studies on Miró and contemporary art.

It has since become a dynamic space in which the art of Joan Miró coexists with the most contemporary artistic creations. The space was specifically designed by Josep Lluís Sert. The museum, built in a rationalist style with Mediterranean features, is integrated into Montjuïc park, and its distinctive outline within the Barcelona landscape reflects the artist’s desire to connect architecture, art and nature.

OBJECTIVES

The Foundation’s mission is to showcase the artistic legacy of Joan Miró and other artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. It combines temporary exhibitions with academic activities and projects collaborating with other institutions and entities in the country.

In Miró’s work, innovation and the spirit of risk are values inherent in social transformation.

COMMITMENT

The Joan Miró Foundation is firmly and exclusively dedicated to art and creativity. It is a benchmark cultural institution both in Barcelona and around the world. Its mission is to bring contemporary art closer to society, to disseminate and research Miró’s work and to foster the creation of new talent. Art, through its emotional and intellectual connections, is a vehicle for learning open to everybody.
